Lenovo India in a few hours from now will be launching its successor to the Vibe P1 called the Lenovo P2. The new smartphone will not just be a hardware upgrade but is expected to feature a new design as well, along with the one special feature that is the P1 was known for, battery life.
Back in 2015, Lenovo had launched the Vibe P1 and Vibe P1m. The Vibe P1 was the higher priced model, which featured a 5,000mAh battery while the P1m was a rather basic model with a 4,000mAh battery inside.
The old Lenovo P1 featured a metal body which found rather unpolished in our review. It featured a metal back and plastic caps at the top and the bottom for the antennas. The cap on top looked out of place and shabby because it had to be pulled out time and again to access the SIM card slot and the memory card reader that made it flex. This time around, keeping the recent Lenovo models in mind, let’s hope that things get better as the images (from the Chinese model) show a well-rounded design that looks the part (at least in the images) with the fingerprint reader on the front.
Coming to the smartphone that will be launched in India today, it will be called the Lenovo P2. The P2 is said to build on the Vibe P1’s numbers. With that said the Powerhouse (that Lenovo is marketing it as) is expected to feature a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display, which is a big jump from LCD Full HD unit on the P1.
Inside we can expect a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC that packs in the Adreno 506 GPU for graphics. If Lenovo does go ahead and launch the P2 with this chipset, it will be the first smartphone maker to announce a smartphone featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 in India.
The Snapdragon 625 that is the successor to the old 617 chipset (in this case the the 615) is an important chipset for this segment, because it brings up to 35 percent lower power usage than its predecessor using the 14nm manufacturing process. This should also make it heat up less thank to better thermal efficiency and better image quality as well. Combine this with a 5,000mAh fast-charging battery, and Lenovo should (on paper) have a winner in this segment.
Lenovo is expected to show up with two variants of the smartphone one with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage and a second bumped up one with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.
On the camera front, you get a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front one. You also get dual-SIM support, a microSD card slot, FM Radio, 4G LTE support and more.
Coming to the software bits you can expect Android 6.0 Marshmallow and along with Lenovo’s usual customisations onboard.
The predecessor of the Lenovo P2, called the P1, boasted of a 5,000 mAh battery, a Snapdragon 615 chipset and only 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which was expandable. The P1 had originally launched for Rs 15,999, while its more affordable sibling, the P1m was launched on the same at Rs 7,999.
So for now we could expect Lenovo to price the smartphone around the Rs 15,000 mark. The smartphone will compete with the existing Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and even with the model dubbed the Redmi Note 4 that is expected to launch in India on 19 January. There’s also the Motorola Moto G4 Plus that currently retails for Rs 13,999 that packs in updated hardware.
The smartphone will be launched today at an event that starts at 12:30PM and you can head to the Lenovo Mobile Facebook Page to check out the live stream or simply click here to view the event live on YouTube.
